When we throw away batteries and they corrode, the chemicals soak into soil and contaminate groundwater and surface water that dangerously impact thousands of aquatic plants and animals in the ecosystems. The US is one of the largest battery consumers, yet only 4% of alkaline batteries and less than 5% of lithium batteries are recycled.
To help my community and the planet, I initiated a battery collection and recycling project at my school as there was no program to recycle batteries used by students and staff.
Jaeyoon is the founder and Project Leader of the Re-Battery Recycling. Ivan recently joined as Project Coordinator. Working together, we have implemented the Re-battery Recycling program at 5 countywide high schools!
