ECU Honors College freshmen, Boys & Girls Club members & Love A Sea TurtleĀ had a productive day with multiple service learning projects. 16 students and faculty joined Boys & Girls Club members and myself baking cookies, assembling 200 fishing line recycling containers, and having fun!

STEM Girls Conference

As the keynote speaker for the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) Girls Conference at ECU, I was excited to share my sea turtle work and message with 100 eighth grade girls. Chancellor Ballard welcomed everyone.

These campers participated in a second week pilot FoodMASTER program at ECU’s School of Nutrition. They learned where food really comes from – they ground the wheat to have flour to make the dough for pizza! Math & science incorporated into cooking fun!

Upstream Downstream Connection Camp Updates

Week 1: Advanced Level camp included experiments and testing, digital photography, GPS & navigation, geocaching, kayaking, snorkeling, scuba diving, seining, ferry ride from Hammocks Beach StateĀ Park to Bear Island, marshland exploration & fun in the ocean for Boys & Girls Club youth who attended last year’s camps.

Week 2: This group continued on with a FoodMASTER camp at ECU – picking fresh vegetables and herbs from the garden, preparing food in the culinary kitchen, learning about food and nutrition.

I was recently invited to share my sea turtle work and STEM-focused (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) summer camp information at the Oak Ridge Associated Universities Conference in Oak Ridge, TN. Also participating in the event were Evelyn Brown and Cindy Putnam Evans, representing ECU’s Center for Science, Mathematics, and Technology Education.
